Pomp W89 Phone Review – The Cheapest Quad Core Phone on the Market

Chinese phone manufacturers are increasingly gaining a share of the Android Phone market and it becomes more and more difficult to find your way through smartphoneland. Dual Core, Quad Core, IPS Screen, Android 4.2,… the combinations are almost unlimited.

When we received the POMP W89, we have to admit we were pretty surprised. The POMP (we have to say, it’s quite a funny name), promises you a 1.2GHz Quad Core CPU, an 8MP Camera and a 4.7 Inch Screen for just £132. Will the POMP deliver or should you be on the look-out for something else? Keep on reading and find out!

What’s in the box?

The first thing you notice when you open the box is that it’s stacked with accessories. Expect the usual Charger, USB cable and user manual but what you’ll also get is two batteries, a custom screen protector, earphones with a built-in microphone and a flip clover. Admitted, the flip cover isn’t the greatest one we’ve ever seen but it will do its job in keeping your phone intact.

Specifications

The POMP W89 sports a 1.2GHz Quad Core processor, 1GB RAM (Note that most other low cost handsets usually come with a bare minimum 512MB), 4GB of ROM storage memory, GPS, 3G, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, an 8 megapixel camera (plus a 2 megapixel front camera) and last but not least, a 4.7 inch 854×480 5 point capacitive multi touch display with superb graphical resolution and responsiveness.

Squeezing an impressive 72 Hours of battery life out of the 2050mAh battery, the POMP easily delivers over a day’s worth of work from a full charge and when only used sporadic, the battery can even last up to 3 whole days. We suspect this to be due to some clever and aggressive power management. When compared to the top branded handsets like Samsung and HTC, this isn’t very extraordinary but we have to keep in mind that the POMP retails for only a fraction of their price.

There is one world class feature where the POMP W89 genuinely outclasses all the rest, and that is its ability to simultaneously use the Dual SIM feature. The stock Android 4.2 version the POMP is equipped with has been revamped to offer full Dual SIM management and thus you’ll be allowed to make and receive phone calls and texts from either SIM card on demand, without rebooting or SIM switching.

When looking at the 8MP camera, there are some improvements to be made when compared to the High end sets like the Galaxy S3. In good light situations, the results are more than descent and pictures come out nice and crisp but when used in poor light situations pictures tend to be a bit blurry. The good built-in LED flash luckily minimizes this effect when used.

Build Quality and Looks

Another nice touch to this phone is its built quality. The phone feels solid, perfectly lies in your hand and the superb screen just catches your eye. Two versions are available, a full black version and a Black/White version (which we reviewed).

Conclusion

Prices at an extremely competitive £132, this Android 4.2 Quad Core Phone couldn’t surprise us more. The POMP W89 easily competes with the best mid-range phones in the world and this at only a fraction of their price. The Dual SIM function is a true world class function, the camera a bit less, but overall this phone could easily replace a 300+ USD phone so major players, watch out!
